I hated cross-country at school. The cold, the rain, the soggy socks, the mud, the hills. And thus began a hate-hate relationship with running. I never could see the point in it, nor how anyone could muster the desire to do it, rather than sit at home where it’s warm and comfy and play their guitar.
But I’ve always loved the outdoors, and never turned down the opportunity to go for a hike in the country, even from a young age. And so whilst I did try (fairly unsuccessfully!) to rekindle some kind of relationship with running - challenging myself to go from couch-to-Wilmslow Half-Marathon - it wasn’t until I moved to Bollington in 2018, and an old friend asked me to join him for lunchtime stomps in our glorious countryside, that I realised that there was, indeed, a way for me to actually enjoy running!
Walking up a hill to see the view is one thing, but when you run up there you don’t half get more bang for your buck! That sense of achievement, the challenge, the beauty of the countryside on our doorstep – and all it took was just you and some shoes. So the next logical step was to join the Bollington Harriers and share the challenge, achievement and beauty with others. And not only that, but to help support the great, inclusive and diverse running culture there is in the Harriers by applying my professional communications skills on the Committee.
These days, I can’t think of anything better than getting out in the cold, embracing the rain, getting my socks soggy in the mud and running to the top of the nearest hill.
